Have you ever wondered whether all that money you’re paying to insurance policies will ever actually pay off? If you’re like me, you might spend the majority of your time being vaguely annoyed that your handing over hundreds of dollars every month to pay for that all-mighty “what if” that people keep telling you about.
You know the “what ifs” I’m talking about…
What if your house was hit by a Russian satellite that fell from space?
What if you saw a rainbow-riding unicorn while you were driving and rear-ended the schmuck in front of you?
What if your dog ate some one else’s super hot Ferragamo pump with houndstooth laser cut detailing?
Or worse yet, your dog ate your super hot Ferragamo pump with houndstooth laser cut detailing?
Well, allow me to introduce you to @ScanBC, the radio-scanning online community that brings us BC’s best news.
Here are some of my favourites from October and how your insurance could save you from these weird “what if” moments:
#Vancouver Police responding to 20th & Arbutus for a male wearing only underwear with a knife chasing a male who broke into his car.

Insurance Hero says put down the knife crazy pants, there’s no need to chase after a suspected thief in your skivvies. You don’t have to look any further than your auto insurance policy for vehicular peace of mind. Comprehensive coverage is an option and will protect you from all manner of mayhem that could befall your car. Check in with your auto insurance company to get details on how to protect yourself and save some cash….and a couple of criminal charges.
#Surrey #RCMP are on the phone with a male 911 caller crying because his feelings were hurt by a police officer. — ScanBC (@ScanBC) October 12, 2015
Insurance Hero says daaay-amn, dude need some psychological-type intervention. Extended health insurance can help some one out when they are at the end of their rope and need to talk to a professional. Whether you’re looking at Blue Cross, Sun Life, or Allstate to cover the gaps in your current Canadian or American* health plan, make sure you have enough coverage to get you through the tough stuff in life.
#Vancouver Police are investigating a B&E to Drones Plus 1700 W 4th Ave after someone cut a hole thru a wall from neighboring suite
— ScanBC (@ScanBC) October 15, 2015
Insurance Hero says your home and business insurance will be the one that saves the day when your property has been damaged and possessions stolen. While I’m hoping that nobody has actually cut a huge hole in the side of your house, I’m happy to say there’s probably insurance for that problem. One of the best ways to plan ahead for potential theft, aside from buying a big dog and installing infrared cameras everywhere, is to have a list of all your expensive items. Take pictures and write down a description (make/model and serial numbers, if applicable) for all your jewelry, art, electronics, sports equipment, and collectibles in your home. That way, when the insurance company ask you to complete an inventory, you can slide over your completed list and look like a total boss.
#Richmond #RCMP are searching for 3 males near near Cambie Secondary School after they left their bong behind. — ScanBC (@ScanBC) October 19, 2015
Insurance Hero says you might want to pass on trying to file a claim for a bong.
But what if it’s a German glass-blown limited edition ROOR bong that normally retails for 2,200 Euros?
Weeeelll, you might want to make sure you talk to your insurance company about topping up your coverage before something actually happens. I’m not really sure what category a collectible bong would fall into but your insurer will be able to help you out. I have no idea what that conversation would look like but I’d be super happy to hear about any bong-related insurance issues you’ve had.
For those of us with more mundane items like expensive jewelry or sporting equipment, give your insurance company a heads up so they can increase the maximum allowable amounts on your policy.
So that’s it on my end. How about you? What’s your weirdest #IwishIhadinsurance moment?
* Sorry Americans, I’m not as clear on how your health insurance works. Do you have extended health plans that cover more services than your general insurance?
