Before Recycling Picture
Who hasn’t heard that recycling can make you money? Or save you money? Whether that’s returning bottles or selling off some junk in your garage, there’s a tonne of tips out on how to go green in some pretty creative ways. Recently, my child cleaned up and “recycled” the lid of our dish soap container which left us with a 4 litre bulk thing of Dawn dish soap and a lidless counter bottle.
So in the spirit of going “green” (trailer park style) or ultimate laziness (who wants to get another dish soap container?), we solved our lidless problem. My husband used his elite engineering skills to create a new lid out of duct and masking tape. Using a clever combination of both materials, he was able to devise a method to control the flow rate of soap using a very complicated equation involving air/fluid exchange (aka stabbing a hole in the top with a pencil). I’m not really sure what to say to be honest. I think he is being creative coming up with a solution to use the bottle without the lid that was recycled. So I don’t think it was being lazy just creative.

I’m not just being political here… but I think the answer is… both! I think most technological improvements over the centuries have been inspired by laziness.

What a cute story, I think that you guys are very creative, and definitely not lazy. I think any attempt at recycling is better than not trying at all, so good job:)
I live in a apartment building, so it is very hard to recycle here, but I try my best to buy used, use cloth bags, and take back bottles and cans for recycling, thank you:)

Thanks for your comment and the compliment! I know what you mean living in an apartment and trying to recycle. When we lived in our old apartment, we found it hard to find the space for recycling. I ended up finding these genius wall brackets that allow you to hang on your wall. We stacked a few of our bins vertically using these “blue bin buddy” mounts.
Maybe that would help store your recycling? I guess there’s the question of how to get the recycling to a depot then…. 🙂

I think it was clever. I really do. I am in that stage where I wonder if my attempts at being more ecologically friendly are actually attributing to my own sense of Laziness. I mean, really, if that were me, I would attempt a new cover as well. If I already had the 4L jug of dishsoap to use up, why would I go out and buy a new container of dish soap for the lid (the laziness factor). Even further to this, despite using all of the new bottle that I would have purchased, I still have plastic waste of the bottle since I only wanted the lid (the eco factor). Either way, I think it was a bang on job!

I try to recycle lots…sometimes it just does not happen! Our local community just announced that the recycling facility is no longer accepting plastic…so sad when we are trying to teach our children to recycle! I guess we now need to reduce and re-use our plastics!
